Fenton Village, Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to the preservation and protection of Fenton Village, a diverse, eclectic neighborhood located in Silver Spring, Maryland. Nestled between Georgia Avenue and Fenton Street (bordered by Wayne Avenue and Selim Road), Fenton Village is home to 240+ small independent businesses.
We are looking for an executive director to lead the implementation and assessment of initiatives and projects aligned with organizational strategic direction to maintain an inviting and safe environment for all Fenton Village residents and visitors while increasing awareness, communication, and networking for every Fenton Village business owner.
Reporting to the board of directors, this experienced leader and manager will understand current challenges and trends in the small business environment while developing creative solutions to enhance the ownership experience for Fenton Village business owners.
Experience writing grants and working with state & local partners, volunteers, and non-profit support contractors is essential; established relationships with local community groups is a plus.
Objectives of This Role
Work closely with the board of directors to assess and address issues affecting the organization and stakeholders.
Oversee daily operations of the organization, providing executive direction for strategies, implementation plans, and compliance.
Identify and address volunteer requirements for efficient operations, and maintain a strong organizational culture that attracts and retains volunteers while accomplishing the organization’s mission.
Increase awareness of the organization, as the main spokesperson and liaison, by initiating interactions with local media, non-profit organizations, and community groups.
Develop an actionable plan for fundraising, grants, managing current funding, and sponsorships.
Comply with all national, state, and local regulations.
Responsibilities
Create business plans for achieving goals and objectives, in collaboration with the board of directors.
Serve as the point of contact for all funding organizations regarding programs, reports, invoices, and payments to ensure alignment with submission deadlines and reporting requirements.
Secure financial support, in partnership with the board of directors, from foundations, corporations, individual donors, and government funding sources.
Support the board of directors, in their leadership role, by providing timely reports regarding services, stakeholder concerns, programming successes and needs, financial updates, and budgetary concerns.
Ensure effective financial management and budget monitoring, following best practices for nonprofit organizations and principles of accounting.
Participate in Montgomery County in-reach/outreach meetings, funding meetings, and provider meetings.
Develop, grow, and sustain partnerships with the Montgomery County Council and Office of the County Executive.
Lead all external communications, including website, marketing, business drop-ins, representational letters for stakeholders, and social media.
Serve as the face of the organization and participate in external events to increase visibility and credibility, along with developing strategic partnerships to further increase community awareness and expand programs.
Cultivate relationships with volunteers whose experiences, cultures, and languages reflect the community served by the organization.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree (or combination of education and demonstrated experience with small non-profits and successful grant proposals).
Demonstrated experience in fundraising, grant writing, marketing, public relations, and sponsorships.
At least five years of experience in leadership and management, with at least three years of the experience within a small nonprofit organization.
Knowledge of leadership and management principles for nonprofit organizations.
Proven success working with a board of directors.
Exceptional verbal, written, and visual communication skills.
Experience in managing budgets.
Entrepreneurial mindset, with innovative approach to business planning.
Dynamic and charismatic team player who enjoys being the public face of an organization.
Desired Knowledge
General issues and challenges of Fenton Village (e.g., upcoming changes to the geographical area, needs of business owners to increase growth, and needs of community to increase safety).
Salary
Commensurate with experience (1099-NEC)
Work Locations
Telework and Fenton Village (face-to-face engagement with Fenton Village business owners and community stakeholders)
